Women's Healthcare in Coppell
Women have specific health needs that family doctors can help with. In addition to general care, a family doctor can help with these other specific woman’s health related services.
Annual exam: Women should begin annual health exams when they turn 18, or when they become sexually active (whichever comes first). In an annual exam, the doctor will conduct a general physical exam, a breast exam, a pelvic exam and a pap smear.
Breast exam: During a breast exam, the doctor will look for any signs of breast cancer or fibrocystic breast condition in the breast tissue. Proper self breast exam techniques will be reviewed so women can monitor their breast health at home.
Bone density test: As women age, they are more susceptible to brittle bones. A bone density test will detect early signs of osteoporosis and are normally conducted on bones in the lower spine or on the thigh bone. Bone density tests are conducted with an X-ray like device.
Contraceptive consultation and prescriptions: Choosing the right form of contraceptive is an important discussion to have with a family practitioner. Doctors can review the choices with their patients and prescribe birth control pills or other types of contraception.
Mammography referrals: Women should have mammograms every one to two years after they turn 40. Although family doctors don’t have the equipment for conducting mammograms, they can make referrals to specialists.
Menstrual cycle issues: A family doctor can help women find solutions to missed periods, heavy periods or premenstrual syndrome problems. If the problems are outside of their area of expertise, they can make a referral to a specialized ob/gyn.
Pelvic exam and Pap smear: A pelvic exam and pap smear should be conducted each year to check for cervical cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, and general reproductive health. A small amount of cells from the cervical wall will be collected and tested. During the pelvic exam, the doctor will check the size, shape and position of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.
Preconception care: Many women seek out their family doctor’s advice and expertise when they are planning to have a baby. Preconception care can include general health assessments (like blood pressure checks) and a pelvic exam.
